Is Technology Right for You?

In the current economic climate, many people are asking: is technology right for them? Is it possible that the advancements we have seen over the last decade or two can be attributed to a personal loss of a job or a salary reduction? What are some of the disadvantages that we must face as the world’s population continues to grow?

There is a typical pattern: people are concerned about the effects technology may have on their job security. “I am concerned that the future won’t bring more jobs.” “I know what it’s like to have a job, but it is not like I can go out and get another one anytime.” These might be very well registered topics not only in recent months.

The debate

Some people use technology to their advantage and benefit others. Others use it to cause harm. Some individuals are careful about the information they disseminate online or through other electronic devices. Others are careless and lose their privacy.

There is a great deal of anxiety over the idea that computers will replace people in the job market. Computer programming is not the only job, and in years to come, we’ll continue with the need for healthcare professionals, architects, electrical engineers, lawyers, and others. It could be challenging, though. These individuals will need additional training and qualifications to obtain or advance into a new position. For many, the internal debate falls within two crucial questions: is it better to update my current skills towards technology? Or switch over into a completely new career path?

As we all know, computers and technology have made many things possible such as email, texting, banking, and other internet-based related services. In the upcoming months and years, we will see this integration level become even more common. But is this something that will continue to improve and be rooted in our lives forever? At this tipping point, it is almost inevitable. So, it may be a smart choice to work towards it rather than against it. Only then will there be less frustration and more opportunities.

Many people believe that it is the development of artificial intelligence (AI) that will lead to robots taking over most of the workforce. This is not far from reality and is already happening today. Think of proofreading, for example. It was an earnest, and very well-paid job extended only to highly experienced people. When writing this article, though, I have been corrected multiple and in real-time using a tool named
Grammarly, which uses AI at its core to perform such an exceptional job. As it gets smarter, we will see many grammatical errors, incomplete sentences, repetitive information, and poor spelling being corrected better and better, and lately, the tone of the message transmitted:

In the world of social media, making real and genuine connections is a matter of a long-time relationship with networking. But, have you stopped and looked at how some people gain a considerable amount of followers just in a matter of a short timeframe? No way! Besides the evil and not recommended trick of creating fake accounts and charging people for it (see picture below), in those better cases, AI was there to help too!

In recent years (and months), new tools and algorithms have been developed to assist with the tough challenge of using time and energy to build trust and engagement with incomer customers. By identifying common points of interest, likelihood to act, and past behavior, the automation of such interaction can give a significant boost to these so-called and famous “influencers.” I’ll soon be creating a new article with a review of some of these tools. As you can see, it is fascinating to perceive where this is all heading and how it will impact the already billionaire-making marketing industry.

Is technology right for you?

This is a question I ask myself every day while raising my hand to reach my phone. Can I live without it?

One of the most significant issues about this debate is that we tend to see technology and immediately scrutinize it by its advantages or disadvantages. Instead, try to see the bigger picture and leave the two sides outside of the equation. Instead, please focus on the long-term benefits of these innovations and learn how to be responsible for their proper use.

There are two books I would recommend reading around the topic. The first book is called: “21 Lessons for the 21st Century.” by Yuval Noah Harari, and the second “Bad Blood” by John Carreyrou. These books were recommended to me by a good friend back in 2018. To this day, I’d always come back for reference and reflection upon the future of technology:

Whether technology is right for you in the future or not will depend on what type of impact it has already on your life and the changes you want to make. If you are interested in making your living more sustainable and comfortable than it currently is, consider giving the technology its right spot in the new 2021 year ahead!
