Helium Mobile Unveils Miami Debut of Crypto-Powered Wireless Network at $5 per Month
Helium Mobile, a groundbreaking hybrid wireless carrier amalgamating the decentralized Helium 5G network and T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G service, has initiated its public launch in Miami, Florida, serving as the primary phase of its rollout. The service comes with an astonishingly affordable price tag of just $5 per month.
This $5 monthly subscription delivers an all-inclusive package featuring limitless talk, text, and data. Notably, Helium Mobile’s offering stands out by eliminating the need for contractual commitments. This service is accessible to Miami residents within specified zip codes, as well as those granted access through the waitlist or referrals from existing subscribers.

While subscribers can indulge in unhindered data usage, it’s important to note that once a user crosses the 30GB data consumption threshold per month, Helium Mobile’s representative confirmed that data speeds will be intentionally reduced. This practice mirrors the strategy employed by traditional unlimited wireless plans, where data speeds often decrease after a designated usage threshold.
The $5-per-month plan represents a substantial markdown from the initially planned $25-per-month rate, which was previously featured on the Helium Mobile website.
In comparison to conventional mobile carriers, contractual-free unlimited plans typically start at around $25 per month, as seen with the likes of Visible, a Verizon-owned subsidiary. In certain cases, carriers offer limited-data plans for prices lower than this benchmark.
Introduced in September 2022, Helium Mobile stands as a pioneering wireless carrier that capitalizes on a decentralized network of cellular node operators. These operators are incentivized to run dedicated 5G (or 4G) hotspots from their premises, providing nearby users with service and earning MOBILE crypto tokens in return.
The integration of T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G service serves as a backup mechanism for Helium Mobile users when they are out of the coverage range of a Helium 5G node. This hybrid model, known as “Dynamic Coverage,” guarantees uninterrupted connectivity, particularly during the network’s initial phase of coverage expansion. The collaboration with T-Mobile was revealed by Helium Mobile in 2022.

Helium Mobile is backed by Nova Labs, an entity representing the Helium network’s creators and pivotal contributors to its development. The company secured a $200 million Series D funding round in 2022, catapulting its valuation to $1.2 billion. The notion of a $5-per-month service fee for Helium Mobile had been mentioned earlier, yet the provision of unlimited access was not previously disclosed.
Notably, Helium Mobile users have the opportunity to earn MOBILE tokens simply by using their phones on the network and opting to share data concerning network coverage. This unique feature empowers users to potentially enhance network reliability while reaping crypto-based incentives.
Helium’s original network, launched in 2019, was tailored to provide wireless coverage for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, encompassing sensors and trackers. This network relies on individuals who run nodes and share their internet connections in exchange for crypto rewards. As of now, the network boasts nearly 950,000 activated nodes, with approximately 400,000 nodes currently operational.
As Helium’s evolution has progressed, it has adopted a “network of networks” approach with the introduction of its 5G network and others. Furthermore, the transition from its proprietary blockchain to Solana took place earlier this year, further enhancing its technological landscape.
